Na people who obtain college degrees, then have to face staggering loads of student loan liable, have it bad enough. But those who finance a few years of higher education through loans, only to drop out before graduating, are in true trouble. They have to make loan payments without the better jobs that come through college educations.
West Virginia University officials are to be commended for attempting to do something about that - as well as to keep students in approach until they do obtain degrees.
WVU has used special student retention programs for years. In important, they identify students who are having trouble, whether academically or personally, and attempt to give them plateful hands.
That program is being beefed up. Currently, WVU students' academic performance is checked once a year. In the to be to come, it will be monitored at least three times a year.
One reason is to ensure students' classroom vocation does not deteriorate to the point they no longer qualify for federal financial aid programs. Another is to keep boyish people from falling through cracks and failing.
University officials now will examine students' grades and definitely loads at the end of fall, spring and summer terms. Those not performing well will be put on academic probation and, if assign, given help. They will be given no more than three semesters to make improvements.
Currently, students in bother are given two years to improve before being told to leave WVU. During that period, of course, they could with piling up student loan debt.
By intervening and, if necessary, ending students' time at the university in a more well-timed manner, WVU will save some young people from incurring debt needlessly. Many may not see that as a favor when they're told their college educations are at an end - but they may well switch that opinion when the student loan bills start arriving.
WVU's approach is a good one. It ought to be emulated by other institutions of higher knowledge.
